Dutch Shepherd
"One of the reasons that it's easy for me to defend and admire the Dutch Shepherd is that in some ways, based on written history of the German Shepherd Dog, the Dutch Shepherd is, essentially, what the German Shepherd could have been." Cheryl Carlson, President of the Dutch Shepherd Dog Club of America
The Dutch Shepherd is a medium sized dog, (22’-25” tall weighing 55-75 pounds), highly intelligent and loyal with strong protective instincts who excels as a guard dog. They make good family dogs as they are playful, affectionate, and active. Although it will equally consider each family member its own, Dutch Shepherds are often "one person" dogs, being the most loyal to just one person.
Although their body style is similar to many other herding breeds, their coat coloring is uniquely brindle; with various shades including gray, yellow, silver, red or gold brindle, and blue. This brindle pattern sometimes gives the coat an impression of stripes, reminiscent of a tiger!
In searching for a Dutch Shepherd, you will find a variety of breeders, most of whom are breeding strictly for performance. Thus, the dogs that they produce, while “striped” on the outside, are much more like a Malinois on the inside! Another faction is currently seeking AKC sanctioning of the Dutch Shepherd breed, claiming only their "pure" bred FCI registered dogs are Dutch Shepherds.
We have chosen to utilize only the best, purebred registered Dutch Shepherds in our breeding program. I feel that the Dutch Shepherd should be a good, medium between the high intensity of the Malinois, and the strong work ethic of a German Shepherd. The typical Dutch Shepherd should work all day, and then snuggle with you on the couch that night. These dogs should be able to fit into whatever situation they find themselves in, and will not require a gifted handler.
Consider one of our Dutch Shepherds if you have enjoyed a German Shepherd in the past, like what you hear about Malinois but are concerned about their “neediness”, or would like a very versatile pet. A Dutch Shepherd can fulfill as many different spots in your life as they have stripes!
