Belgian Malinois
The Belgian Malinois (pronounced mal-in-wah) is a very intelligent, lively breed who excels in an active family environment. They are a medium to large sized dog, which can come in all shades of red, fawn, and gray, but always with a black face and ears. Male Malinois average around 24”-26” tall and 65-85 pounds, while females tend to be smaller at 22”-24” tall and 60-70 pounds. Due to their history as a working dog (i.e. being bred for function over form) the Malinois can vary greatly in appearance. They range from stocky to slender, but are always squarely built.
Belgian Malinois are graceful, swift, and agile on their feet. They require lots of exercise for continual physical and mental development, and should receive early exposure (socialization) to different people and dogs so that they will be accepting of them later in life. They adapt equally well to both an urban or country environment as long as they are provided with an outlet for their boundless energy. Many enjoy playing retrieve games, chasing a ball and fetching for what seems like hours! Formal obedience training is recommended to channel this energy into useful activities.

When I first saw a working Malinois, my first thought was “what an ugly little brown dog”. Then I was completely amazed by that same little dog that could scale a seven foot high vertical wall, do a high speed call off, and then be as social as could be.
My breeding program began in 1989 with the import of a puppy that would become my foundation female Florida Des Chenaies Pothier aka “Flash” that I trained and titled to French Ring III. When bred to my later French import Olaf Hassan an incredible line of smart, stable, social, and exceptionally trainable Malinois began – all with great health that excelled at competition and in family life. Our Cher Car Kennels Malinois breeding program is legendary for producing high quality competition dogs that you can live with. Our Malinois held more French Ring titles than any other US kennel’s bred dogs during the 1990’s (and quite possibly still today), and my training students have earned over 150 French Ring titles. We have also produced countless numbers of search and rescue dogs, police dogs, detection dogs, assistance dogs and therapy dogs. I do not produce a lot of Malinois, but those that I do are exceptional. If you are a high energy individual who enjoys being challenged by the intelligence, wit and humor of your own dog, the Belgian Malinois might be the breed for you! References always available.

Cher Car Kennels has a long standing relationship with law enforcement and military service personnel. Although appreciative of a high drive Police Service or Military Working Dog, these individuals require a different type of canine companion in their own home, and many choose a herding breed to safeguard their loved ones. These dogs must be vigilant in their duties, but also calm and gentle with family members… playing with the kids or snuggling with the cat. Cher Car Kennels’ 45+ years of breeding experience has produced a long line of dogs whose temperaments meet that need. Our dogs protect the families of those who protect our freedoms™
